Hida Takayama Ramen

Area around Robson and Denmann is quickly becoming the place to go for authentic Japanese Ramen. It’s not uncommon to see people lining up outside of well known places such as Santouka or Kintaro. While the quality of some are very good, many serve up small portion of noodle and very few thinly sliced meat (any thing else will cost you extra).
We visited Hida Takayama Ramen on friend’s recommendation. It’s tucked away on the 2nd floor of Robson Public Market, a little hard to spot. The menu is very simple, only 6 items on the board with picture beside each. You can have your ramen in miso, spicy miso, shio (sea salt), shoyu (soy sauce), or sesame flavor. There are also typical gyoza and steamed pork bun, except none was left when we got there. We ordered miso, shio, and sesame flavors. We were pleasantly surprised when we got our order. Each bowl was full of noodle, topped up with thick pieces of meat, bamboo, green onion, and nori sea weed. The noodle has good texture and soup full of flavor. Anyone tired of typical miso or shio should try the sesame, which is what I had. What I really like is that there is no MSG!
I gave it 5 stars for the portion, taste and good value. They do close shop bit early, around 7:30 pm. Go early and you won’t be disappointed.
